I decided to add a section about POTTY TRAINING because of what I went through with my son Nicholas. As I have mentioned in some sections, my son is active, funny, loving, caring and has many fabulous attributes he must have gotten from his father :. There have been only a few things so far in my brief time as a mother that have really been trying for me. The first being Nicholas doesn't sleep well by himself, the second being his slow willingness to start talking and finally, potty training.

Nicholas is 40 months and has been potty trained for 1 month with hardly any accidents. It was a very LONG journey for me and probably for him with all the pressure I put on him. Mamas', I sat up nights asking myself, "What am I doing wrong, why doesn't he go on the potty?", "Is something wrong with him?" I had friends tell me to "Nip this in the bud!" and don't think I didn't try. I would cry, Nicholas would cry and finally I just gave in. He was making progress sitting on the potty; he just had no interest to go on the potty. Well, I said to myself, he will go when he is 3 and THAT'S IT!!

When he went for his 3rd year check-up, the nurse asked if he would pee in a cup. I just laughed and said, "No he isn't potty trained yet". The horrific look on her face said it all. "He isn't potty trained yet and he's three?" she asked. "Well, I GUESS we will have to use what the BABIES use!" She emphasized guess and babies so emphatically that all I could do was stand there and look at her with my mouth open. The thoughts that went through my mind were all about how bad of a mother I was. I thought I was lacking in that department because give me a break folks, he is my first, I wanted to say. I am winging this, just like the other first time moms out there with stubborn boys and girls.

After the doctor's visit and I will have you know my FABULOUS doctor, Dr. Stavinsky, said he was perfect and it's not a big deal! Of course, but why would I listen to the positive words of a doctor, instead of honing in on the negative words of a nurse? Well, when we got home I started at the ol' grind stone again, with FAIL!! Finally, I threw my hands in the air after a week with no success and said he will be the only kindergartener with a diaper on. But, a funny thing has happened before my pre, pre, pre kindergartener has gone to kindergarten. He asked to sit on the big potty. What? Did I actually hear those golden words? Yep, he peed on the potty just like that. NOT WHEN I WANTED HIM TO, when he wanted to. Now, number 2 came about two weeks later, but he actually walked into my kitchen while I was making dinner and said, "Mommy poopy". It was unbelievable and all I could think about was, he went when we was ready. A good 6 months of kicking myself and putting myself down as a mother because I was doing to something wrong to this poor child and all the while, he just wasn't ready.

My only suggest to all of you parents out there, listen to your child. If they show the signs early, that is fantastic for you. If they are late bloomers, just love them for being late bloomers and don't pressure them, because in the long run you may be hindering their later performance. I often wonder if I had just let up on Nicholas, would he have gone sooner.

As I was doing my own research while potty training Nicholas, I came across some very informative websites:
